Non-EU students (India, Pakistan, UK, and others)
Before you fly: Visa D
You need a long-stay Type D visa from the Bulgarian embassy/consulate in your country before traveling — the university sends you the admission documents for it. You cannot convert a tourist visa into a student residence permit after arrival.
After arrival — the two clocks start ticking
- Address registration — within days of arrival. Your landlord (or dorm) registers your Bulgarian address. This is why the housing contract matters — see the Housing guide.
- Residence permit application — within your first two weeks. Apply in person at the Migration Directorate office in Pleven . Don’t wait: appointments and document gathering take time, and your Visa D has limited validity. The university international office walks students through this — go there in week one and ask for the current checklist.
Documents typically required
The exact list changes — treat this as “what to start gathering,” not the final word:
- Passport with your Visa D
- University certificate of enrollment (the international office issues it)
- Housing contract + landlord’s notarized declaration
- Health insurance valid in Bulgaria for the permit period
- Proof of sufficient funds (bank statement)
- Passport photos and the application fee
Your residence card
- Approved permits give you a residence card valid for 1 year — your Bulgarian ID as a foreign student.
- Renew every year — start the renewal 30–45 days before it expires. Mark it in your phone calendar now; missed renewals create serious problems.
Travel bonus: Schengen
Bulgaria is a full Schengen member, so with a valid Bulgarian residence permit you can travel to other Schengen countries (Greece, Italy, Germany…) for short stays without extra visas. Your friends studying elsewhere in Europe can visit you the same way.
EU students (Italy, Greece, Germany…)
Much lighter process: no visa needed to enter. If you stay longer than 3 months, you register your stay and receive a certificate of registration as an EU citizen — bring your ID/passport, enrollment certificate, and proof of insurance (EHIC card usually suffices). The international office will point you to the right desk.
The golden rules
- Go to the international office in your first week. Every step above, they’ve done a thousand times.
- Photocopy and photograph everything — every document, every receipt, every stamp.
- Never miss the renewal window — set two phone reminders: 60 days and 40 days before your card expires.
- Bring more passport photos than seems reasonable to every appointment.
- If an official speaks no English, show the document you need on your phone and stay patient and polite — it works.
