Why students go
The proper hiking trip from Pleven. Apriltsi is a mountain town at the foot of the central Balkan range, and from the Vidima quarter a marked eco-path climbs to the Vidimsko Praskalo — one of the highest waterfalls in Bulgaria, ⭐4.8.
It’s forest, river and rock the whole way, and a completely different Bulgaria from the flat farmland around Pleven.
Getting there
Two stages, and you can do it without a car:
- Pleven → Troyan by bus from Pleven bus station.
- Troyan → Apriltsi by bus.
Check both timetables before you go, and the return times especially — these are small-town services, not hourly city buses, and being stranded in the mountains at dusk is a genuinely bad end to the day. A car makes the whole trip much simpler.
Good to know
- This is a hike, not a viewpoint you drive to. Proper shoes, water, and a charged phone.
- Go in late spring or early summer for the strongest water. Late summer can be thin.
- Mountain weather changes quickly — take a layer even on a warm day.
- Don’t go alone the first time, and tell someone where you’re going.
