Gabrovo has more museums per resident than anywhere else in Bulgaria, and they’re all within walking distance of each other. If it rains all weekend, this is where to go.

Interactive Museum of Industry — ⭐4.8 from 840 reviews, the best-rated of the group. Gabrovo was Bulgaria’s industrial capital, and this is hands-on rather than glass cases. Closed Mondays, otherwise 09:30–17:30. imi.gabrovo.bg
National Museum of Education — ⭐4.6. Bulgaria’s first secular school was founded here in 1835. Daily 09:00–18:00.
Regional History Museum — ⭐4.6. Daily 09:00–17:30.
Dechko’s House — ⭐4.5, a preserved period townhouse. Daily 09:00–17:30.
Getting there
By bus from Pleven bus station, or by car in roughly 1 hour 20. Check return times before you set off.
Good to know
- Pick two or three, not all five. Museum fatigue is real, and the tickets add up.
- Combine with Etar open-air museum 7 km outside town — for most people that’s the highlight of the trip.
- Together, Gabrovo and Etar are a full day, and better as an overnight if you also want the mountains.
