Why students go
The easiest proper day trip from Pleven — only 32 km. Two things make it worth the journey:
The Covered Bridge (Pokritiyat most) — the only covered bridge in Bulgaria, lined with little shops, crossing the river into the old town. People compare it to the Ponte Vecchio in Florence; it’s smaller, wooden and quieter, but the comparison isn’t unfair. 4.6 stars from nearly 8,000 reviews, open at all hours, free to walk across.
The Vasil Levski Museum — ⭐4.8 from 700+ reviews. Levski is the Bulgarian national hero, the man who organised the revolutionary network against Ottoman rule, and Lovech was his base. If you want to understand why every Bulgarian city has a street named after him, spend an hour here.
Around them is Varosha, the old quarter: steep cobbled lanes, wooden houses, and a fortress on the hill above.
Getting there
By bus — regular services from Pleven bus station to Lovech, roughly 45 minutes. Buy at the counter; check the return times when you arrive so you’re not stranded.
By car — about 40 minutes.
Good to know
- The museum closes for lunch: 13:00–14:30. Plan around it, or use the gap for the bridge.

- Lovech works as a half day, or a full one if you climb to the fortress and eat in Varosha.
