Why students go
Troyan sits where the plain ends and the Balkan mountains begin, 59 km south of Pleven. It’s the first place from Pleven where the landscape genuinely changes.
The Museum of Folk Crafts and Applied Arts — ⭐4.7 from over 2,000 reviews — is the town’s centrepiece: Troyan ceramics, woodwork and traditional crafts, in a region that has made these things for centuries. Open every day, 09:00–17:00.
Beyond the town the road climbs into the mountains, with the views that make people come back. Troyan Monastery, the third largest in Bulgaria, is a short drive from the centre and worth adding if you have a car.
Getting there
By bus from Pleven bus station, or by car in about an hour. Buses are less frequent than to Lovech — check the return time before you set off.
Good to know
- Works as a long day trip, or an overnight if you want to walk in the mountains properly.
- Troyan is also the gateway to Apriltsi and the Vidimsko Praskalo waterfall — there’s a bus onward from Troyan.
- Mountain weather changes fast. Take a jacket even in summer, and check the forecast before hiking.
